Sunshine and snowfall

Snowflakes in the sunshine
scattered across the afternoon,
like white fireflies
dancing in the wind,
swirling between
leafless walnut
and green spruce
as gray cloud
and blue sky
played tag against the mountain.

Sunshine and snowfall.
It didn't seem to bother the chickadees,
but the juncos were probably grateful
that the spilled seed they were eating
wasn't covered up by the white.
